Midterm Reflection

Image
I'd say that the most interesting concept we've talked about up to this point is cancel culture. This was something that I was already familiar with, but I like how we've taken more of a deep dive and see other's experiences from it. With all of the different articles and personal stories we've gone over, whether it was about Justine Sacco or the Chick-Fil-A executive, it's clear that there are pros and cons to our so-called "cancel culture". It makes me look at the whole concept in a different way and I'll be honest, it makes me not take it as seriously. That's unfortunate because it should be taken seriously, but we have abused it so much to the point where it is used for things that aren't necessary in my opinion.  This next part won't be something I feel is boring, but I'll take the approach of knowing a good amount about it already. The next concept I'll talk about is the whole idea of social movements online. I did learn ...

Different versions of me, but still me

There are people who want others to see them in a certain light, when in reality they aren't exactly what they are made out to be. I am not one of those people. Honestly, what you see on my social media is what you get. I have never been one to look a certain way on social media but you get a completely different person in reality. Now, there are some exceptions to certain social media, like LinkedIn for example.  LinkedIn is obviously where you have a lot of professionals looking at your profile. These professionals could be potential employers, so of course I want to look professional.  Via Tenor Gifs Although I am not my 100% true authentic self, this is still who I am. In professional settings, I am myself. I believe that everyone has different aspects of themselves that fit certain environments. I love to write, specifically about sports. Given that this is the case, I have articles I've written about sports on my LinkedIn page for people to see. Sports is a passion of mi...

Say it to my face next time

There have been some instances where I've caught myself getting into a heated argument over social media. The most recent one I can account for was over Instagram, where there were many people that had strong opinions about this one particular post. Let me tell you what happened.  The post of "controversy", which it wasn't, was a video of this African American teacher getting told by one of her students, who was also African American", that she had gotten accepted in to Princeton. Obviously, the teacher was over the moon about it. She went over to give the girl a hug saying how proud she was and things like that, and commented "and you're a black girl" and gave her another hug after she said that. The line, "and you're a black girl", was what caused the backlash on social media. All of the people who commented on that line saying they had an issue with it were White people. The arguments they were saying were things like, "Why men...

The Importance of Affordance

Image
There are a lot of reasons why we use the social media we use. I have a variety of social media platforms for a plethora of reasons. To me, however, I did not realize how much I benefit from certain social media for certain things. Dr. Yunkang Yang really opened my eyes to the affordance of each social media to me.  For starters, I did not know what affordance was. I now know that affordance refers to the action possibilities provided to the actor by the environment. How this pertains to social media is that the affordance Facebook gives to me is being able to promote content for my job. The affordance Instagram gives me is being able to have entertainment and to stay updated with friends and family.  To get more specific with each, I'll go into what affordance each app gives me. With Instagram, I follow a lot of sports content. This is how I stay up to date with all the sports news and literally everything sports related. I also stay connected with friends and family on...

Who I am

My name is Enrique Antonio Chaurand. Many who know me call me Antonio; that is typically what I go by. I was born in Alexandria, Virginia, but moved to Kansas City, Missouri when I was only six months old. From there until the age of nine, that's where I lived. I have a bunch of family that lives there, both on my mom and dad's side of the family. When I was nine years old, I moved to Maryland and have been here ever since. I have only my parents and my four younger siblings with me. Unfortunately, all of my family is back home in Kansas City. Besides that, however, I enjoy living in Maryland and have made a good life here.  I'm currently a senior here at the Mount. I am a communications major with a concentration in journalism. I want to get into sports as a profession; I absolutely love sports. Whether its writing about it, talking, posting stuff about it on social media, I'd love to do any of those things in the sports world once I graduate this coming May.  Aside fr...
